The Tappan Tutors
The Anna Helen Tappan Center for Computer Assisted Learning is a Western College Program Peer Learning Center supported by the Western College Alumnae Association and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Miami University. Its use is restricted to members of the Western Community, defined as all Western Majors and Minors, students currently enrolled in Western courses, and residents of Peabody Hall and other residence halls on the Western campus. In terms of hardware, the Center is equipped with G4, G5, and Intel Macintosh Computers, 2 flatbed scanners, a HP 4100N laser printer, and audio and video editing equipment in our Digital Studio and Laboratory. Software includes Final Cut Pro, Adobe Illustrator, PageMaker, Photoshop CS2, and PageMill; Atlas MapMaker, Authorware Professional, MacroMedia Dreamweaver & Director, Statview, and JMP as well as the standard suite of Apple and Microsoft software (e.g. Microsoft Office). The Center is staffed by 8 fine Western College Program student Peer Tutors (AKA "SISCCAL pals") who are here to help. Our phone number is 529-1881. Anna Helen Tappan
Distinguished faculty member and beloved alumna of Western College for Women, Anna Helen Tappan graduated in 1909. After earning A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University, she taught at Iowa State University for three years before returning once more to her alma mater, where she served as professor of mathematics, dean of women and ultimately academic dean, retiring in 1958. Western awarded her one of only ten Centennial Alumnae Citations in 1953 and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 1954.
