Course Description:

This course develops conceptual tools for solving problems with technology and explores roles of technology in the social context of the Western community. The primary goal of this course is to enhance the peer tutoring experience for both the peer tutors and student "clients." Students will discuss general and specific issues related to the role of the Tappan Center for Computer Assisted Learning in the Western community with an eye towards improving our information technology resources, and our means of approach to them available to Western students, faculty, and staff. A key characteristic of this course is that pairs of students (generally a relative "expert" and a "novice") will learn about a specific topic, such as a specific software application, and teach other seminar participants about that topic. They will also prepare "handouts," generally in the form of WWW pages that will be used by Tappan peer tutors, and the rest of the Western community.

In addition to scheduled meetings, students are expected to participate in a series of workshops conducted for the Western community. Grades will be determined on the basis of a take-home final exam for which students will be expected to document what they learned during the course of the semester.
